Rachel Palmer
Consultant Pharmacist Genomic Medicine,
NHS South West Genomic Medicine Service
Rachel is the Pharmacy Lead for the South West Genomic Medicine Service Alliance and the Membership Lead for the UKCPA Genomics Committee. She has an interest in personalised and targeted medicines and has led the SW regional project to mainstream DPYD pharmacogenomic testing, to reduce the risk of serious adverse effects with fluoropyrimidine chemotherapy and to ensure equitable access to testing across the region. Rachel is passionate about highlighting the key role that the pharmacy workforce has to play in implementing genomic services.
Rachel’s enthusiasm for genomics was initiated in her previous role as the Lead Pharmacist for Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products at University Hospitals Bristol & Weston NHS Foundation Trust. This role included working to help implement a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell service and to introduce an innovative gene therapy, Zolgensma, for the treatment of paediatric patients with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. She is a member of the Pan UK Pharmacy Working Group for ATMPs and continues to work clinically in CAR T cell and bone marrow transplant (BMT) services, with more than 15 years’ experience in BMT.
